Background
The third prince was born in 685 IY, the youngest of three brothers, middle child of five. He was not expected to ever inherit the throne of the Empire and so was used in a political move to tie the Principality of Nélissé to the empire forever, by marrying him to the first princess Sotíría. Makarí, Sotíría, The Principality of Nélissé, and The Ílorísían Empire all were amenable to the arrangement. Makarí is the full-blood relation to his older brother Rén, sharing the same Noble Consort mother (now Empress Consort Mayura).
Makarí’s early life was spent learning the things all noblemen learn in Ílorísía: swordsmanship, tactics, chivalry, politics, history, falconry, archery and mathematics. He did not show an aptitude for magicka, unlike his older brother Rén and older sister Kíríël.
Rén excelled at nearly everything he did, and that became a sore point for Makarí, whom there were little to no expectations. As he got older, he became more of a problem child in the royal family and had a bit of a bad reputation. At 14 he would go out into the capital and gamble on hínaríkoto games at pubs. Eventually, he began playing and became quite the skilled player. Of course, his deck would be unfairly supplied with rare cards from remote shrines retrieved by the household servants, but he still showed great technical skill.
Things started to change when Princess Sotíría turned 13 and the courtship dates began. He fell in love quickly and could not believe that his fiancée was such a beauty. He was 16, and his personality changed a bit, as love tends to do to people. To this day he still remains an avid hínaríkoto player and collector.
He wants to get along with his sister Ísananí, but she refuses to acknowledge him. Still, on each of his travels he brings her a souvenir.
Personality
Makarí suffers from an inferiority complex, stemming from his placement as the third prince, and his inability to earn his father’s approval while his siblings Rén, Sélén and Kíríël can shine so brightly. His status has given him a degree of freedom not awarded to his brothers, but in his complex he cannot bring himself to recognize or appreciate it. Makarí has an aptitude for battlefield tactics and politics and is a natural leader. He may be aloof and joke at times, but he is a person who is loyal to those that are loyal to him. On the downside, Makarí may be too passive, getting swept up in the currents of the politics around him, of which he has no love for. He is not quick to trust and is often suspicious of others’ motivations.
Makarí can also be quite persuasive when he sees something or someone he wants. He can be covetous and greedy. He tends to be sarcastic, and quite lazy. But he is looking for the time when he is needed and will step up when the time comes. He is quite capable. He is a natural womanizer and flirt.
He has recurring dreams which may be prophetic.
In the dream, he sees a nude female Amí which has been beheaded, sitting on a marble throne in a pool of its own blood. The throne room itself is burning. There is a long sword piercing the heart of the goddess, and many severed hands are holding the grip and pommel. An enormous eye suddenly appears above, leaving Makarí alone in its shadow. And when Makarí looks down at his hands, it was him holding the sword all along.
Princess Kanalísa Satorí Nélissé sa Sotíría, First Princess of the Principality of Nélissé

Background
The first princess Sotíría was born in 688 IY in Nélissé. Her early life was like most royals: she was instructed on the essentials on being a lady of the court, on history, politics, calligraphy and mathematics. Unfortunately, she showed no aptitude for magicka and so was not formally taught.
She is unaware, but she is a natural orator, being born with the ability to make contracts. Sotíría is a gifted singer, and she loves to sing bard’s tales, legends, laments and poems when she can.
At her insistence, she was taught the basics of swordplay. She was also taught falconry, which is compulsory to all free citizens of Nélissé. This tradition is a vestige of the original settlers, and it is a tradition that they take pride in. The falcon is on the royal crest.
In a move orchestrated by the Rínadaésé, the Princess was engaged to Prince Makarí of the Ílorísían Empire, when she was 3 years old. The two meet throughout the years during official functions, at events and the like.
They started to have official supervised courtship dates, starting when the Princess came of age at 13. They met every few months or so and exchanged letters more and more frequently. The two fell in love with each other, and the wedding was set for the Princess’s 19th nameday.
Personality
Sotíría is an attractive girl who is bright, resourceful and kind. She is also naïve. As a princess, she was spoiled, and her whims were often indulged in the palace. She acts impulsively, deciding action based on feeling and what she wants at the moment. Sometimes this may work in her favor, but it usually doesn’t.
Despite living in the palace, she is knowledgeable on worldly things. She’s studied extensively with the best educators in Nélissé and has sought help for the “bedroom” education from the maids, of which she has been particularly interested in of late.
Princess Lorísé Mísaral Ílorísía sa Kíríël, First Princess of the Ílorísían Empire

Background
Kíríël was born in 683 IY in Ílorísía. She is the eldest daughter born to the third emperor Kétéro, and a rare noble consort from the Mísaral barony of Mírésía. Thus her given name is in Atíríníl, and that language is the primary one spoken in her mother’s palace in the Imperial Complex.
Early on, immense pressure was placed on her to excel, as both the first imperial princess and as the scion of the Mísaral barony. Kíríël was precocious and oddly mature as a child; many saying she resembled the late second emperor. Despite being a year younger than Sélén, while growing up both Sélén and Makarí looked up to Kíríël as an older sister.
She showed a particular aptitude for numbers, and by the time she was a teenager, she was assisting with the imperial household finances. She has a aptitude for management and running the household operations.
Curiously, it was discovered that Kíríël often knows things that she shouldn’t. Her siblings know that she knows much of the goings-on in the Imperial complex, often before anyone else. She has somewhat of an information network among the staff. If anyone needs to know what is happening, or what someone said, they’d go to Kíríël. That said, all of the staff and attendants adore her.
Kíríël is also a gifted mage. She showed an aptitude for both water and air magicka, and after graduating from the Naraline College at 19, she was fittingly recognized as an aegirine order ice mage.
Personality
Kíríël is a stoic person and doesn’t show emotions easily. She has been described as icy, cold and statuesque, among other things. She really only opens up to Sélén and Makarí and has a relationship with the youngest sister Ísananí.
This icy princess is also quite beautiful. Her tall height, combined with her stoicism commands respect when she enters a room. If nothing else, she is effortless at projecting power.
Though she is described as unemotional, a few in the imperial palaces know her true nature – she is quite caring and doting on her “younger” brothers and sister and lets her masks down around them. She never forgets an attendant’s Nameday and provides them with a lavish gift. She puts her family first, above all else, including the empire itself.
Atínasha, Mercenary Earth Mage

Atínasha is an earth mage who has spent the past decade wandering the continent, doing odd jobs and living a meager lifestyle. She keeps her background close to her chest and does not trust anyone.
Personality
Atínasha has trust issues. She does not get along well with others, though she can pretend well enough. She has a diminished capacity for empathy and finds it difficult to know what others are feeling. Despite these shortcomings, she is extremely prideful and always thinks that her way of thinking is correct. It is incredibly rare for her to admit she is wrong, and to apologize. That said, she is somewhat of a paper tiger and will crumble upon adversity and cry. At her heart she is a lonely woman.
Empress Níamé Makokída Ílorísía sa Mayura, Empress Consort of the Ílorísían Empire

Background
Mayura was born as the third princess of the Kingdom of Palénsía in 660 IY. She was 17 when she was sent to the Ílorísían Empire, to become a consort in the emperor’s harem. She was ecstatic as it was a great honor. The third princess of a middling kingdom could potentially rise to become empress of the most powerful country in the world. Emperor Kétéro himself was similar in age, at 22.
She gave birth to the Kétéro’s first male heir, Rén in 577 IY, at 18, guaranteeing her ascension to Empress Consort later that year. She later gave birth to Makarí in 584 IY, at 25.
Mayura has always been ambitious, and a bit spiteful since she was a child. Being born as the third princess, she has been seen as a political pawn from birth. She was instructed on the ways of the court ladies, but was also instructed on various countries’ customs, learning Laénara and Atíríníl, managing finances in case she was sold to a mercantile republic, statecraft and managing households. She knew early on that her value was in her name, and not in her own worth, which left her bitter with a drive to prove her own worth regardless of her name.
She herself orchestrated and proposed the sale to the Ílorísían Empire and quickly set out to seduce the emperor when she arrived, as she knew the tradition of promoting the mother of the crown prince to Empress. She quickly became pregnant and gave birth to the crown prince. What she did not expect however, was that she would become fond of the emperor after his visits to her and fall in love with him.
Love was not part of the plan, it was not part of her training, and it had nothing to do with royal marriages or consorts. She was ashamed of herself for it. Typically, after becoming Empress, she would no longer be part of the harem but would instead manage it and would no longer receive nighttime visits from the emperor.
But the Emperor was also sweet on Mayura. Duty compelled him to visit the other consorts in the harem, but he did visit Mayura’s bedroom occasionally as well. And so, a strange thing happened. The Empress herself gave birth again, to Makarí, a rare royal child conceived out of mutual love.
Personality
When not managing the royal household and domestic affairs, she enjoys the outdoors. Ílorísían ladies typically are trained in needlework, making quilts and heavy textiles, however Palénsía is different, with a much warmer climate. Since she became empress, she is able to leave the palace with her attendants, so she has taken up aséna riding and falconry again.
Mayura is highly intelligent, and has a mind for politics and strategy, but is rarely afforded the opportunity due to her status. But she is highly competent at the imperial household responsibilities, and often at odds with her husband’s vassals.

Background
Aruno was born in 668 IY as the first son of the Koson (baron) of Koönda, in Nélissé. As the Koson’s first son, he was supposed to inherit the title of Koson, but instead, after completing knight training. he chose to join the army.
Aruno had a fairly normal upbringing for a noble. The kosonia of Koönda is a rural area, and the Koson’s estate was located outside of a small town. As a boy, he had made a friend of an older common girl whose family owned a bakery in the town. They would meet in secret and play sword fighting, and she shared her dreams of being a swordswoman. However, as they got older, her responsibilities to the family business increased, and eventually she could no longer come out to play.
He met her with his attendant at the family bakery, and she explained that she has no more time for childish dreams. He told her he would become a knight in her stead and carry on her dreams and asked for her to wait for him.
He graduated the knight training at 21, 8 years later and immediately returned to the town. In the time away, she got married and is running the family bakery with her husband. Aruno was heartbroken that his first love has gone so far out of his reach and did not wait for him to return.
He again told her his resolve to becoming the greatest knight, but during their conversation she called him Lord Aruno. The formality and coldness was a twist of the dagger in his heart.
That experience made him join the High Prince’s army. A koson’s son who is also a knight is on the officer fast-track, and he was offered an officer position upon pledging.
He made a name for himself commanding skirmishes and suppressing highwaymen and bandits. He rises the ranks and finds himself selected to the Royal Family’s Guard, following in his grandfather’s footsteps.
This put him in direct contact with many of the palace staff, and in particular a maid who was the daughter of a small city lord. The two became lovers and eventually married.
Shortly after, the guard captain retired and recommended Aruno for the position. He was voted in by the remaining guard and appointed guard captain by the Royal Commander. Aruno finally achieved his goal, becoming the highest ranked knight in the country.
Personality
From his early life he has always been an intense person, abandoning his comfortable life for what he deemed was a greater cause. He is concerned with duty and with upholding the noble image of a knight, often to the detriment of the people in his life who are the most important to him: his wife and young son. Knights are permitted families and to spend important times with them, but he will often forsake them in the name of his duties as a knight, when others could have just as well handled the task. He is a workaholic, foolish and idealistic. He does not have a mind for strategy and deception.
Prince Lorísé Eaäsia Ílorísía sa Sélén, Second Prince of the Ílorísían Empire, Imperial Army Third Sword

Background
Sélén was born 682 IY in Ílorísía. He is the third eldest, and the middle child of the three brothers. He is the half-brother to all his siblings. He was not expected to inherit the throne but was prepared for it in the worst-case scenario that Rén was unable to. This means that his worth was quite a bit more to the Empire than Makarí’s, and so Sélén was made to follow the strict rules, training and supervision that the eldest Rén was, but without the privileges and rank that should have come with it.
Sélén has thus always been jealous of Makarí, who’s freedom he coveted. Sélén became even more incensed when he saw how beautiful Sotíría was becoming. Sélén was given a choice of wife from the duchies, however he still could not find one prettier than what he thought Sotíría was. Sélén is in love with Lady Fénríya.
Sélén is an excellent swordsman. Were he not a royal, he would have made for a famous knight.
Personality
Sélén is broody, and angers easily. He can be fierce but also gets overwhelmed and shaken easily. He believes himself to be a tough person but is actually thin skinned and his pride can be injured more easily that he’d like to admit. That said, he is not a sadistic or cruel person and will try to be fair if he can. Even though he hates his brother Makarí, if given a useful pawn, Sélén knows well enough to make use of them.
Sélén is not the best strategist but seems to have luck on his side. He is assertive and believes in his own self-worth. He tends to get tunnel vision, which allows many things to slip by him in the royal court.
Princess Lorísé Maélía Ílorísía sa Ísananí, Second Princess of the Ílorísían Empire

Background
Ísananí was born in 698 IY in Ílorísía. She is the second daughter born to Emperor Kétéro and is the half-sister to her siblings. Her mother died during childbirth, and so the Empress and her staff have raised her as if she was her blood daughter. It is uncommon for a consort to raise another consort’s child; however, the two mothers were friends and got along well.
Ísananí has been training on all the things a royal princess should learn, but it was early on when she showed that she struggled with reading, writing, and speaking. She would jumble her words, suffering from dyslexia. Two years ago, she developed severe anxiety, which caused her to stop speaking entirely. Now, she has selective mutism and will only speak in whispers to her older brother Rén, older sister Kíríël or her adoptive mother, Empress Mayura. She does not speak to Makarí or Sélén.
Despite that, Makarí has made the most attempts to get on her good side. She treasures the gifts he brings her but cannot bring herself to speak to him. Unknown to her, Ísananí has developed an intense attachment to Makarí. His attention makes her anxious, and his absence makes her treasure every small gift he brings.
Sélén ignores her, and so she does not like him.
Ísananí resembles her mother and most note how she will be pretty when she gets older. She is an anxious and reserved girl outwardly and in public, but she dreams of being the perfect princesses from the stories. She can’t read or write well, and so she spends most of her free time in the arts. She has a talent for the harp. Normally quiet and timid, she becomes a force when playing and is able to fully articulate herself through the music. Empress Mayura encourages her by telling her that she doesn’t have to force herself to speak, that her music is her words, and so she has dedicated herself to that mindset. She has been composing her own melodies for the harp and uses a logogram system of her own making for musical notation. Her arts instructor suspects that she may be a musical prodigy.
Navāné, Sekh Mercenary

Background
Navāné was born in 681 IY, to a Sekh pairing in the Séwaragí. She showed promise early on in her hunting and fighting skills. She was also unusually bright in her tribe and was set for the tribe leadership. However, the tribe was eventually absorbed and taken over by a larger rival, and most of the men were killed, and the women taken for wives. She managed to escape with her older brother, and the two eventually made their way to the coastal cities. They found passage to Balai and did what they could to survive as street urchins. Under her command, they formed a street bandit gang. She stole her signature dual díaruría blades around the same time and engraved her tribe’s runes into it.
Conflicts in the group arose between her and her brother, who was jealous of her strength and leadership abilities. The rifts between the two leaders split the gang into pieces, and by the time she was 17, she was seeking passage to the mainland continent.
She tells others that her brother may still be living somewhere, but in truth she killed him when he came to her privately one night, seeking reconciliation. She was under the assumption that he would kill her unless she killed him first. It is a sore subject, and her greatest shame, and so she conceals the truth. However, there are many Sekh who know what she did.
Since arriving on the mainland, she has been working as a mercenary. She still uses the stolen dual díaruría, blades that looks like an arm-length convex cleaver. It is made of metal produced in Balai, that resembles black Damascus steel. Balai blades are expensive to purchase in Balai and astronomically expensive to purchase on the mainland. She wanted to avoid any attention in her travels, but the expensive swords and her fighting ability have made her stand out. Especially since she has only the basic training from her youth in the tribe, and the majority of her experience was fighting on the streets for survival in Balai.
The warpaint tattoos on her face immediately identify her as a tribal Sekh of the Séwaragí.
Personality
Navāne, like most Sekh, is attracted to and respects strength. She also views an intellectual mind as a form of strength and respects that too. She can be simple at times, due to her lack of formal education. She is straightforward, and utilitarian. Her methods may come across as cruel or draconian, but none can say they are not effective.
She is on the older side for a female sekh mercenary, as one her age would have returned to the tribe with a suitable mate by now. However, she values her life as it is, and has no plans for children.
Lord Ríonshímé sa Tíléké, Imperial Household Minister of the Ílorísían Empire

Background
Tíléké was born in 651 IY, as the second son to the Lord of Ríonshímé, the second largest city in the Dominion of Lorísé, after the capital. His direct lineage grants him the title of Shié, which is still held by his older brother, who is the current city Lord of Ríonshímé.
Tíléké was always pegged for civil service. As a young man, he was attractive, standing at over 6’ tall, with sharp features. He had black curly hair and dark eyes, that appeared black as well. Early on, he was found to be competent at magicka and so attended the Naralíné College of Illumination. He graduated as a thulite order water mage. Despite his concentration in his studies, he was unremarkable as a mage and entered the army’s mage corps at 19. He made a name for himself in the army for his management abilities, and caught the attention of the crown prince Kétéro, who recruited him as an assistant in his retinue. Shortly after, Kétéro was anointed emperor, and Tíléké received a promotion to Imperial Household Minister. He was 25.
As the household minister, Tíléké was responsible for the funding and operation of the palace, the imperial harem, and any other personal needs of all who live there. The palace complex is like a corporation itself, with the Empress at the top and the Minister under her. Two years later, and Tíléké was working directly under Empress Mayura.
Personality
Tíléké is not well liked and gives off the appearance that he is a prickly, ornery, unapproachable and unwavering old man. Some of this is true. Tíléké himself is somewhat of a curmudgeon, and somewhat of a misanthrope. All of his life he has been either quicker or much more competent than everyone around him. Rather than make him into an arrogant person, it has made him frustrated with people in general. It is one thing to think you are the most intelligent person in the room, and another to actually be the most intelligent person in the room (in most cases). That said, he does want to have normal relationships. It is a situation where he does not like anyone but still does not want to be lonely. This internal conflict of diametrically opposed feelings only further drives his frustration. Despite his position and constant interactions with people every day, he lives a mostly solitary life, even though he is in a politically arranged marriage. He doesn’t hold his tongue and can be harsh or demeaning when speaking. He is currently in a secret physical relationship with Fenriya, who approached him first.
Laölantí, Traveling Apothecary

Background
Laölantí was born in 389 IY, to a common Méru family in the Shímaírí. His family had long operated an apothecary, and so Laolantí learned the family trade early. However, his interests have always been in alchemy. He would spend time at the family shop, and alternate days at the alchemy atelier.
All Méru have a tradition of leaving the Shimairi for 50 years when they come of age, to see the world and return with fresh perspectives and new technologies. At 27, Laölantí began his journey, and moved frequently, acting as an herbalist and traveling apothecary. As a pastime, he also began picking up unique alchemical arrays and has his own compendium.
As time passed, he found himself staying in villages for longer and longer periods of time as he became attached to the areas or to the people. But he would never admit that.
Around 100 years ago, he settled in a village in the south of Damantía becoming the town’s local apothecary and founding a makeshift alchemy atelier. The village chief’s daughter quickly became enamored with him, and the two fell in love. However, she was already promised to the local lord and had to marry him instead. They remained friends, though painful, and she promised her firstborn daughter to him.
Laölantí married her daughter when she came of age, and the two of them fell deeply in love. But he did not forget the friendship he had with her mother, who came to stay with them back in the village after her husband passed; her eldest son inheriting the lordship.
Now old and dying, his first love passed away, and for the first time he felt the loss and grief of immortality.
He remains in the village for years with his wife, and they had twin sons, one inheriting his immortal Méru blood, and one not.
Coming of age, his immortal son is granted return rights to the Shímaírí and chooses to do to. His mortal son would not be granted the same rights and would have to live in the mortal worlds of the Asékén.
His wife eventually passes away too, and he falls deep into grief. Both sons have long left the village, which is now on the decline. At the time, his mortal son is an old man in his 60s, appearing to be more than three times the age of his father.
Personality
The loss of both of the loves of his life has left him deeply bitter, and pessimistic in general at love. He is currently contemplating his own life, and the point of being immortal. He feels as if the light has gone from his life and is deep in grief.
Laölantí is an arrogant and somewhat pompous person. He is prickly and is quick to criticize. However, these are a defense mechanism to protect him from further getting involved with people who will die before him. That has become his deepest fear. He still harbors dreams of becoming a traveling apothecary.
Nomíkí, Assistant to the Chief Imperial Mage of the Ílorísían Empire, Imperial Army Fourth Mage

Background
Nomíkí was born in 680 IY to an aristocratic family. Though they did not own land, her family runs a mercenary company, having contracts with baronies throughout the empire. Nomíkí showed promise in magicka at an early age and was trained by mercenary mages until she came of age and enrolled at the Naralíné College. She did well at her studies and was top of her class.
Nomíkí was set to become the top student at the school until her third year when the Second Witch Fénríya became a first year. Nomíkí intensely disliked Fénríya and was jealous of her popularity and the attention she received. Things slowly started to change when she attended a lecture on “Variable Oscillation Frequency Coupling”.
Oscillation coupling is the stuff of fairy tales, unable to be accomplished by anyone, let alone introducing variable oscillation. But Fénríya handily demonstrated it in a practical example, coupling fire and force magicka repeatedly to make herself fly and flip around the room, controlling her direction and speed with adjusting jets of flame. She then explained the theory, and Nomíkí realized then that this feat she just witnessed was miraculously transcendental, and she could not think of any words to describe her awe. It was like she witnessed a goddess.
After that, she couldn’t hate her even if she wanted to. Nomíkí decided that she had to become close to this extraordinary person and the two soon became friends.
Nomíkí graduated as a thulite order projectile mage, top of her year. She was scouted by the Imperial Mage Division and joined in the projectile mage squad. She spent a year in the field before transferring to the Imperial Army’s Administrative Division at the capital. After Fénríya graduated and became the Chief Imperial Mage, Nomíkí applied for the assistant position and was hired by Fénríya. The two have been together for the past 4 years.
Personality
Nomíkí is loyal and capable, though a bit reserved. She can be socially awkward. She is enamored with Fénríya, but not in a romantic way. Her professional life after graduation has been in pursuit of Fénríya. She made it to be her assistant in record time, though the position is not one where she has any command over troops. But that is just the way Nomíkí prefers it. She genuinely loves magicka, and particularly projectile magic.
Her eyesight is not good, and she was told to give up on it early on. She adapted to using looking stones to adjust her eyesight, by holding them up to her eye to aim. She has multiple looking stones on chains hanging from her uniform that the uses as scopes to aim long distance. She is unique in that she is the only one who has done this.

Background
Kaété was born in 679 IY to aristocratic family, his father being a baron’s second cousin. That side of the family has always been wealthy landowners. His family did not own land, but his father was a gifted assessor and accountant to the baron, whom his mother was first cousins with. The baron permitted his family to live in one of his estates.
Kaété’s father passed away after he was killed while conducting a tax assessment for the baron. Kaété was 4 years old. They were allowed to continue to live at the estate for the time. His mother was still quite young, only 21 when his father died. Four years later, when Kaété was 8 and his mother was 25, she was married off to a local lord within the barony. Kaété was taken in by the baron, his uncle.
Kaété’s birth parents were sweet and doting, but the baron was anything but. He had little to no interaction with him, and Kaété received no love at all. Every action was transactional. He was taught how to read, write and mathematics, but he struggled. He showed promise with the sword. He was sent off to train as a knight and was officially knighted upon graduating at 21.
Personality
On the surface, Kaété is a serious man, dedicated to his craft and to his duty. But this is a façade. He’s actually a troubled, depressed and pessimistic person, who finds little worth in himself or others. He constantly assumes the worst in people, and people seem to steer clear of him. He wants to love and be loved, but he does not know how.
Despite that, he is good at keeping up appearances and has risen the ranks of the Imperial knights. His ability to appear calm, although inside he is a mess, has earned him the respect of his peers and subordinates, causing him to earn promotion after promotion. All see him as a promising leader in the organization, but inside he wants to just be normal. He didn’t want this at all and does not know how to act.
He is known to be ferocious on the battlefield. Despite all of his internal and mental strife, and despite himself, he knows that he is very proficient at his job.
